John comes from a gymnastics family. His dad Fred was a gymnast and a member of the 1968 Olympic Team which competed in Mexico City. Fred was the head coach of the men's team at the University of Minnesota from 1971 through 2004. His sister Marie was a member of the 1984 Olympic Team which competed in Los Angeles. John was a member of the USA National Team from 1988 through 2000. He was a member of six World Championship Teams and a member of the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Teams. John is one of the most accomplished male gymnasts in American history.

John attended the University of Minnesota where he received a double major in International Business and Finance and a minor in Speech Communications. Athletically, John rewrote the collegiate record books by winning four Big Ten all-around titles and three NCAA all-around titles. He is the only gymnast in history to accomplish both. He has stayed closely involved with collegiate gymnastics as a judge, coach and fundraiser.

John has remained involved in the sport of gymnastics since his retirement from competition in 2000. He has worked as a performer, commentator, coach, judge, athlete representative for the current U.S. National Teams and is a member of the Board of Directors for USA Gymnastics. Over the last four years, John has worked extensively with USA Gymnastics in promoting their events to the media and member clubs across the country.

John started attending summer gymnastics camps in 1992 as a coach and special guest. Since that time, he has regularly attended a variety of camps across the nation. He has been involved primarily in the coaching and promotional aspects of the camps. In 2005, he partnered with John Macready, and they have worked ever since to make Flip Fest the top resort summer camp in the country.
